An exhibition going on!
The year 2024 marks a pivotal chapter in Bangladesh’s history. Amid the turbulence of mid-year, with the bloody monsoon and a student-led uprising, we became witnesses to a momentous revolution that reshaped the nation.
As journalists of the Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM), we are honoured to present a compelling photo exhibition titled ‘Bangladesh Reborn: Pathway to July 36’ at the EMK Center, Gulshan.
This exhibition commemorates BJIM’s second anniversary and showcases powerful imagery captured by BJIM members – not all of them are necessarily photographers – during the uprising. Our work, featured in prestigious international publications including The New York Times, Financial Times, The Economist, Time, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, AFP, Reuters, Bloomberg, EPA, Nat Geo, France 24, Zuma Press, Voice of America, Irrawaddy, and Benar News, documents the intensity and resilience of those transformative weeks.
The movement, which began in early July 2024, culminated in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5— a date symbolically referred to as ‘July 36’. Her 15-year rule ended as she fled into exile in neighbouring India. The uprising claimed over 750 lives, with thousands more injured, many due to police brutality.
Political analysts describe this period as the birth pangs of Bangladesh 2.0, heralding what some call the ‘Second Republic’.
BJIM, established in July 2022, remains dedicated to championing free press and fostering collaboration among Bangladeshi journalists in international media, both at home and abroad. Our mission is to uphold factual, fair, and ethical journalism.
We invite you to experience this journey through powerful visuals and narratives. The exhibition runs until December 12, 2024.
Together, we stand strong.
Please note: December 2, 2024 is the inauguration day with a few casual talks conducted by BJIM members who covered the Bloody Monsoon. The first 100 will be allowed in to attend the event. It will be a first come, first served based event.
Also: There is no spot parking facility at EMK Center. You can park in the adjacent roads if necessary.
